Business WiFi should be designed around what people need to do: reliable video calls, stock scanning, guest access or a busy meeting room. Signal bars alone do not show whether the network has enough capacity or whether a moving device will keep its session.
Before choosing access points, write down the users, applications and locations that matter. This turns a hardware quotation into a design that can be checked at handover.
Enterprise WiFi and the building
Managed access points offer centralized configuration and visibility across a site. Their value depends on the selected platform, licensing and operating process. A small office may need a modest deployment; a dense floor or roaming warehouse has different requirements.
Building materials, neighbouring networks, shelving and changing stock can affect radio coverage. Measure the actual site rather than assume every Saudi building behaves the same way. Include occupied meeting rooms and normal working conditions in the assessment.
A useful survey deliverable identifies proposed AP positions, coverage and capacity assumptions, interference, cabling requirements and the areas requiring validation after installation.
Capacity and roaming
Estimate active devices and application demand by zone. A meeting room has a different peak from an open office, and a warehouse scanner may need dependable roaming across a large area despite sending little data.
Roaming depends on the client as well as the network. Test representative phones, laptops and scanners while moving through the site with the applications they use. Set acceptance criteria for call quality or application continuity instead of promising that every handoff will be invisible.
Inspect switch uplinks, access-point power requirements and cable performance alongside the wireless design. A suitable radio cannot compensate for a congested uplink or an insufficient power budget.
Authentication and guest access
HPE Aruba's WPA3-Enterprise guidance describes enterprise authentication modes using 802.1X. Where appropriate for the client estate, use individual identities or certificates rather than a password shared across the whole workforce.
The identity system must support the design: define enrollment, certificate renewal, account removal and session revocation. Disabling a directory account should be accompanied by checks that the relevant network access has ended.
Guest access needs explicit isolation from internal systems. A captive portal is a sign-in mechanism, not proof of isolation. Test the policies from a guest device. HPE's validated wireless configuration guide provides implementation guidance for its supported platform.
Questions for a WiFi proposal
- What application and device assumptions were used to size the network?
- Which areas were surveyed, and what remains to be validated after installation?
- What AP placement plan and coverage results will be handed over?
- How will roaming and guest isolation be demonstrated?
- Are the switches and cabling suitable for the APs' full operating requirements?
- Who owns monitoring, updates and fault response after acceptance?
